Licensed driving instructor - Akureyri · Akureyri
Personal driving lessons for beginners and those looking to improve. I guide you through the entire process — from the first lesson all the way to your test.
About me
My name is Haukur Björnsson, born and raised in Akureyri. A family man with two young daughters. Over the years I have travelled extensively and have most likely spent more time behind the wheel than the average Icelander.
I graduated in 2015 with a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Iceland. That same year I passed my advanced driving test and began working as a driving guide, which I did full time until 2022. In 2022 I qualified as a driving instructor and have been working in that role ever since.
The process
Start by speaking with a driving instructor who will guide you through the process. You apply for a learner's permit at island.is/okunam and register your instructor. If you answer yes to any of the health questions, e.g. that you wear glasses, you will need to contact a doctor, obtain a medical certificate and submit it to the district commissioner. You also need to take a passport photo and submit it. Once all of this is done, you can begin driving lessons. At the bottom of this page you can contact me, reach me on Facebook or call 845-0434.
Once you have applied for your learner's permit, contact your driving instructor again and you will find a suitable time together.
The minimum number of lessons required is 10 lessons and driving school 1 to be eligible for supervised practice driving. 12 lessons, driving school 1, 2 and 3 to take the written driving test. 15 lessons and the written test to be eligible to take the practical driving test.
Keep in mind that the number of lessons needed varies between students. The numbers mentioned are the minimum required, but many students need more. It is common to need between 17 and 25 lessons in total before taking the driving test.
It is very important to drive regularly during supervised practice, as this helps keep the lesson count to a minimum before the practical test. Driving regularly means driving two to three times a week. All driving helps — even if it is just a trip to the shops and back.

Prices for driving schools may vary depending on which school is chosen. The minimum number of lessons is 15, with the 16th lesson being the test lesson. This is the minimum cost based on the minimum number of lessons with a driving instructor and passing all tests on the first attempt. It should therefore be kept in mind that it is common to need to retake the written test more than once, and not everyone manages with the minimum number of lessons. Actual costs may therefore be higher.
*NOTE – Prices are based on the price lists of driving schools and Frumherji in April 2026 and may have changed.

You need to complete at least 15 lessons along with Driving School 1, 2 and 3. You must also have passed the written driving test. Your instructor registers you for the practical test.
No, that is not required.
There are several driving schools that offer Driving School 1 and 2, including: Ekill, 17.is, Netökuskólinn, Ökuskólinn í Mjódd and keyrslan.is.
In Akureyri it can be taken at Ökugerði and in the capital area at Driving School 3.
Yes.
Yes, Ökugerði is open all year. In winter, availability depends on demand and conditions. Students are placed on a waiting list and courses are held when conditions allow.
I can offer the option to spread payments if needed — best to discuss this with me at the start. If payments are split, a bill fee will be added to each invoice.
I send invoices through online banking.
The short answer is no, but it depends on the circumstances. Students who begin lessons at a set rate will complete their lessons at that rate, provided they finish within a reasonable time. If lessons extend into a third calendar year, the rate will increase in line with the pricing for that third year.
Example: A student starts lessons in April 2026 and receives supervised practice in June 2026. Prices increase in January 2027. The student returns for lessons in August 2027 and passes the test in September 2027. In this case, the 2027 lessons are charged at the same rate as 2026.
Another example: A student starts lessons in April 2026 and receives supervised practice in June 2026. Prices increase in January 2027 and again in January 2028. The student resumes lessons in February 2028 and takes the driving test in April 2028. In this case, the 2028 lessons are charged at the new 2028 rate.
I can send the invoice either to the person paying or to the student. Best to discuss this with me at the start of lessons.
3 years.
To obtain a full driving licence you need to take a driving assessment. To take a driving assessment you must have held your licence for at least 12 months and have no penalty points in the last 12 months. If you have held your licence for 30 months and receive a penalty point, you will need to apply for a new provisional licence and take a driving assessment once you have been point-free for 12 months. It is therefore best to take the driving assessment as soon as possible.
You can contact me here on the website, on Facebook or by phone to register for a driving assessment.
The driving licence you receive with a category B test allows you to drive a car with up to 8 passengers (excluding the driver), a vehicle with a maximum total weight of 3500kg, and a trailer with a total weight of up to 750kg. The trailer may be heavier if the combined weight of the car and trailer is under 3500kg, as long as the car is rated to tow it — but if the combined weight exceeds 3500kg, the trailer must not exceed 750kg.
If siblings or twins start driving lessons at the same time, a 10% sibling discount applies to driving lessons.
I mainly teach in Akureyri but can take on students from the surrounding countryside. Lessons will mostly take place in Akureyri, so it is important that students are able to begin their first lessons in Akureyri. I can teach further from Akureyri for an additional fee, or if there are multiple students — best to get in touch.
